Interview with Elizabeth of Elizabeth Ladean Photography

02

This week PhotographyKC had the opportunity to interview Elizabeth of Elizabeth Ladean Photography.  Elizabeth is an amazing Kansas City photographer with a soft and beautiful style.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in North Carolina! The foothill mountain area to be exact. Born there, raised, and lived near the same area until 2008.

How do you  like Kansas City?

I like it so much that I moved here after only 6 months post my first visit!! 🙂 In all seriousness, I absolutely love Kansas City!! There is a lot about this city that feels like a cozy small town, and yet it’s far from that, to me at least! There is always something to do, things to see, there’s good combination of hustle and laid back flow. It’s great!!

How did you get started in photography?

Like many, I was always interested and “into” photography from a super young age. In my early twenties, I was eager to get into wedding photography when, a gal who barely knew me, asked me to shoot her wedding. I jumped at the chance, despite being pretty clueless, and was completely hooked on weddings after that.

What was your 1st camera and what do you shoot with now?

My first “big girl camera” wayyy back when, was a Canon Rebel XT with the kit lens. That one didn’t last long as I wanted to upgrade as soon as possible, and did so a lot over the years. My current camera of choice is the Canon 6D, which I have a few bodies of, and I shoot with an array of Canon’s Prime lenses.

Was your family supportive of you wanting to become a photographer?

Quite honestly, I think a lot of my family – especially many years ago, saw photography as purely a hobby and not a career. I’d like to say that viewpoint has changed, but specifically for my parents at least, it’s clear they are still shocked I do this for a living and am successful at it. I don’t mind, it has a lot to do with the mindset of a very small country town where you either become a nurse or a teacher and basically nothing else 🙂 And that’s okay!

What inspires you and your photography?

The obvious, like epic natural lighting. Locations that are outdoorsy and beautiful. And the not so obvious, like the inter-workings of a couple in love, their quirks and the way she only crinkles her nose at his jokes, or the way he always reaches for her when they start to walk. Witnessing the relationship and love between families on wedding days and just being there in those moments, camera in hand.

Do you have a favorite type of photography (wedding, family, fine art..etc)?

Weddings, absolutely, – essentially anything involving a joyful couple in love. I love journalistic approaches to images, and shots that are very organic. My favorite thing to photograph without a doubt, is joy, regardless of the form or subject.

Do you have a favorite place to shoot?

Ya know, I really don’t! Kansas City is gorgeous and has so many endless areas, both the obvious ones, and the not so obvious ones!

What separates you from other photographers?

I believe it is my ability to connect on a level that is beyond just a transaction deal between client and photographer. It’s becoming more than that to my clients, especially my brides – arriving on their wedding day as an old friend, not just a vendor. Going above and beyond, under promising and over delivering on multiple levels. Knowing exactly how to make people feel comfortable in front of my camera, and taking photography from something as simple as getting photos taken, to a completely awesome, fun, and joyful experience.

Do you have anything else you would like to share with our readers?

I absolutely love what I do for a living, and am always looking forward to my current weddings, future weddings, and getting to document all the joy of people’s most special day!
